New Music: The East Pointers ‘What We Leave Behind’ Is An Eclectic Mix Of Storytelling
Prince Edward Island’s The East Pointers introduced their second album this fall as a follow up to their Juno Award-winning debut Secret Victory, released in 2015. What We Leave Behind is an eclectic mix of country, pop and blue grass embedded in traditional jigs and folk roots. Known for their ability to reach listeners around the globe with their warm and distinct celtic sound, fiddler/singer Tim Chaisson, banjoist Koady Chaisson and guitarist Jake Charron alongside Canadian singer/songwriter Gordie Sampson produced eleven tracks that weave together stories about life on the sea, travels abroad and historical accounts of tragedies while all echoing hope, love, and loss. Monthly Roundup: October 2017
October was a rough month for Canada as we collectively mourned the loss of Gord Downie. We were lucky to have him. As a songwriter he touched on so many themes and locations that we associate with as Canadians that his songs have become inextricably linked to the very things he was singing about. In the act of celebrating—and sometimes criticizing—Canada, he helped to define our culture, our country, and became part of that definition. The Tragically Hip will long reign as ‘Canada’s Band’.
We also lost someone closer to home with the death of John Dunsworth. The Nova Scotian actor best known for his role as Jim Lahey on Trailer Park Boys passed away this month. For better or worse, he brought a spotlight to the Maritimes as well as a way of life that would sometimes shines through the cracks that appeared between mockumentary and documentary. At least he showed us how we could laugh at ourselves.

Staying Local, Youthful and Spontaneous: Halifax Pop Explosion Continues To Invest In Their Roots After 25 Years
Halifax Pop Explosion attracts not only the best of the east coast, but some of the best in Canada and beyond. The music festival is a vein for this to grow every year, and once again it delivered with headliners Japandroids, Cloud Nothings and The Rural Alberta Advantage. However, while these shows are diamonds forged from the relentless work put in by the local music community, they are not what best represents the letters HPX. The festival is all about staying humble to the scene’s roots and investing in and giving new opportunities to homegrown talent. At the quarter century mark of creating some of the most diverse line-ups on the east coast, the festival still remembers to mark its flag in all the areas that make it special.
