Single: Millians Debuts an Anthem for Escapism with ‘Edge of California’

If you were in the market for a bit of escapism (just a hunch) then “Edge of California” might be the summery bit of something else you’re looking for. The song is the debut collaboration from Millians, the most diverse group to ever be cobbled together from New Brunswick’s musical gene pool. The unlikely trio features electronic artist and producer Nick Fowler (FWLR), alternative pop songwriter Dan Verner and folk singer-songwriter Catherine Kennedy, and that particular smorgasbord of talent means “Edge of California” is an unexpectedly beach-worthy tune.

“Edge of California” might be what you’d get if you were to take Halifax-homeboy and east coast representative in all things Joel Plaskett’s hit “Nowhere With You” with John Denver’s “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” then combine it with Swedish electronic music duo The Knife’s “Heartbeats,” and run it through Brian Wilson’s espresso machine. The song is all sunshine, dance parties and an unhealthy amount of wanderlust, and it’s practically begging to get remixed.

Of course, the song comes at a time when we’re either forced to explore the possibility of travel through the power of imagination, or perhaps self-indulging in a little amateur foreign invasion. California might as well be the moon right now.

Catherine Kennedy, however, explains that song isn’t necessarily about literal travel, but making the best of the time you have (which you likely have in abundance) to enjoy yourself.

“We were sitting on this song forever and thought, what the heck let’s release it now. We wrote this about getting away from the hustle of the busy city and living life to the fullest and enjoying the people that matter most to you in your life rather than material things. Which, in hindsight, seems pretty timely and accurate considering everything going on in the world right now. Since no one will be travelling to Cali anytime soon, it’s the closest thing we got,” laughs Kennedy.
