Jaclyn Reinhart Talks About ‘Rearview’ and How It Nearly Meant Leaving the Music Industry Behind

Since Jaclyn Reinhart last released any music, her life and her sound have both undergone some drastic changes. Trading in her pop-rock style from the Americana of her heroes Tom Petty and Sheryl Crowe, “Rearview” is about recognizing when the time has come to put your past behind you and move on with something new in your life.

For Reinhart, however, it proved to be a close call as to what she was putting behind her and it was very nearly her music career that got left behind.

“During the past five years, I have embarked on a personal journey to healing, moving on, and celebrating my strengths after realizing that the traumatic events related to an abusive relationship, co-dependant friendships and self-sabotage had been leading me on a chaotic path and holding me back from being my the best version of my authentic self,” explains Reinhart.

“I knew that I was worth more than that so started with leaving unhealthy relationships with various people and alcohol included to focus on healing. I began to really dig in and discover who I was as a person and also as an artist. It’s been a very up and down road since I began that journey but I’m on the better side of it now because I stayed the course.”

Reinhart says that she found the process of writing and sharing her story through music to be cathartic, and hopes that the songs featured on her upcoming album will make people feel “less alone and as if they were written just for them.”

“As I look back honestly this album came to life when I needed it! I almost gave up on recording and pursuing music professionally in early 2020 right before the pandemic struck,” says Reinhart. “Healing, although positive and necessary to restoring balance to your life can be messy and unpredictable.

“I went through a really, really rough patch that I wasn’t sure I could recover emotionally or financially for a long time. I had to decide my artistic future to push forward to leave it in my ‘Rearview’.”

In the process of crafting the album, and the inevitable cuts and edits, Reinhart arrived at a point where one song got left behind, and another needed to fill its place. She reached out to Kim Williams, who Reinhart had met through a Songwriters Association of Canada’s Master Class to work on a song and from the process of brainstorming, “Rearview” is what emerged.

“Our common ground seemed to be the strength we found in leaving less than desirable relationships situations so that became the theme of this track. We worked so well together and it turned into one of my absolute favorite songs that I’ve written/co-written. It’s about the moment you find the sense of confidence to put an unhealthy relationship behind you and begin the healing process. I think we have all been there and know when it’s time to move on, it just takes a little time.”

Reinhart says that the whole process of putting the album together, from the moment of conception to its first release, took a year and a half. It’s a far cry from turning her back on the music industry entirely. Jaclyn Reinhart’s  Sleep with Ghosts is set to be released on October 15, 2021.
