Monthly Roundup: January 2018

Congratulations! We’ve all survived 2017, and got a head start on a shiny new year. I feel confident about this, like we learned a lesson from last year. We’ve toughened up some, and we’re no longer the sort of doughy sacks that would have quivered at impending nuclear fallout. We brushed that off like it was nothing. We’ve got this. We are totally prepared for the angry army of cloned monkey super-soldiers that China is about to unleash. No big deal.

In the meantime, here’s everything we covered in January of 2018. Continue reading Monthly Roundup: January 2018

Monthly Roundup: November 2017

It was a damp, drizzly November in our collective souls. Angry mobs took to their social media with pitchforks and torches and memes like an online version of The Purge, and they razed a swath of degradation through whatever was left of our surviving celebrities.

In the meantime, in an arena that has been ceded to the absurd for so long that we no long question it, Kim Jong-un and Donald have switched from hurling insults across Twitter to lobbing ballistics and threatening to wipe the rest of us out.

Back at home, Erin Costelo makes history as the first woman to win the Nova Scotia Music Award for Producer of the Year. It’s a shame we don’t get more excited about the victories that don’t involve bloodshed.

Here’s everything we covered in November, 2017. Continue reading Monthly Roundup: November 2017

Monthly Roundup: October 2017

October was a rough month for Canada as we collectively mourned the loss of Gord Downie. We were lucky to have him. As a songwriter he touched on so many themes and locations that we associate with as Canadians that his songs have become inextricably linked to the very things he was singing about. In the act of celebrating—and sometimes criticizing—Canada, he helped to define our culture, our country, and became part of that definition. The Tragically Hip will long reign as ‘Canada’s Band’.

We also lost someone closer to home with the death of John Dunsworth. The Nova Scotian actor best known for his role as Jim Lahey on Trailer Park Boys passed away this month. For better or worse, he brought a spotlight to the Maritimes as well as a way of life that would sometimes shines through the cracks that appeared between mockumentary and documentary. At least he showed us how we could laugh at ourselves.

Aside from that we saw the tail end of album release season. Let us know what you liked best. We always love hearing your feedback!

Monthly Roundup: September 2017

Welcome to the end of September! Festival season is officially behind us and now we’re wading ear-deep through one of the busiest album-release seasons of the year. This isn’t even all of them, just the albums that we had time to get to. There are, in fact, only so many notes the human ear can hear in the course of an evening.

Here’s everything we’ve managed to write about in the meantime. Continue reading Monthly Roundup: September 2017
