October was a rough month for Canada as we collectively mourned the loss of Gord Downie. We were lucky to have him. As a songwriter he touched on so many themes and locations that we associate with as Canadians that his songs have become inextricably linked to the very things he was singing about. In the act of celebrating—and sometimes criticizing—Canada, he helped to define our culture, our country, and became part of that definition. The Tragically Hip will long reign as ‘Canada’s Band’.
We also lost someone closer to home with the death of John Dunsworth. The Nova Scotian actor best known for his role as Jim Lahey on Trailer Park Boys passed away this month. For better or worse, he brought a spotlight to the Maritimes as well as a way of life that would sometimes shines through the cracks that appeared between mockumentary and documentary. At least he showed us how we could laugh at ourselves.
