Moira & Claire’s ‘South Shore’ Might Mean Summer Fun for Us, but It’s a Bittersweet Single for Them

Moira & Claire have hit the ground running for tourism season with a musical itinerary for your trip to Nova Scotia. Their latest single, “South Shore,” is a bubbly little bundle of fun that screams summer and is perfectly tailored to fit into the next commercial for Tourism Nova Scotia. They’re pretty much set to be the Tomato/Tomato of Lunenburg.

The pair of sisters take a look at the province’s South Shore region through rose-coloured glasses and presented with their usual effervescence, though putting a fresh twist on it by trading up their ukulele for their first attempt at composing with a mandolin. Apparently, the experience has led to a new obsession for them.

“‘South Shore’ is a happy folk-pop tune about taking a trip around the beautiful coast of Nova Scotia,” says the duo. “It name drops iconic south shore locations including Carter’s beach and Lunenburg. Keeping with the Nova Scotia theme, the bridge references Joel Plaskett’s ‘When I Close My Eyes’.”

“South Shore” is a particularly poignant song for Moira & Claire. While most of us are hearing the call of the beach, these sisters are experiencing something a little more bittersweet. It describes a final trip with family or friends—the last sojourn of their youth—before having to go their separate ways.

“It reflects our own situation,” explain Moira & Claire. “Moira is moving to Montreal in the Fall for university, so we are trying to make the most of our last summer together for a while.”

Summers have never lasted long and they all add up far too quickly for comfort. Even if they have to be bittersweet, it’s still nice that they’re now available with a commemorative song.
