Premiere: Cyrus R.O. Quartet Offer a PSA of Sorts With ‘Space Flunky’

The Cyrus R.O. Quartet have yet to release a full album, but they’re already to launch into the massively popular format of PSAs. With their new video “Space Flunky” the band want to remind you that there’s more than one way to get to outer space, but you need to choose which one is right for you.

With a DIY first-person perspective video, the Quartet lay out the dangers of pharmaceutical experimentation. It’s a recounting of experiences had by band frontman Cyrus Orkish during his wayward youth, complete with tinfoil hats and alien conmen. Despite that, Orkish warns that those things don’t guarantee a good time.

“When I was in high school, I smoked some weed that was laced, maybe with PCP or muscle relaxants, but either way certainly more than marijuana,” explains Orkish. “It was a pretty bad experience, very high-anxiety. I could barely speak and I was having hallucinations: the wall was wavering. At the time I wasn’t very experienced even with alcohol, so the lack of control I felt was quite overwhelming, and the experience was quite scary.”

“Years later, I was having dinner with a friend back in Cape Breton and out of nowhere I got hit with a wave of disassociation. Before long, I was feeling pretty much exactly the same as I did during the drug trip and, like then, I was totally unprepared, having traditionally not been prone to panic attacks or flashbacks like that. I felt a similar frustration at the lack of control. With ‘Space Flunky’, I wanted to capture that loss of agency under a force overwhelming and unfamiliar, but I wanted to do it in a fun, kind of novel way, so… aliens.”

Don’t take drugs, kids.
