Single: Kids Losing Sleep Debuts With ‘In Love No More’

Halifax’s latest pop-rock band Kids Losing Sleep are releasing their debut single, “In Love No More,” today and it’s all of the catchy early summer love vibes you’d expect, except it’s really about quite the opposite.

“In Love No More” serves up imagery of young summer love and beats that are perfect for a dance party. The lyrics, on the other hand, are anything but. They dig into the troubles of still being in love with someone you know you shouldn’t still be hung up on. Kids Losing Sleep hits with a creative contrast right out of the gate, pushing them into the punk side of the pop world.

The band was formed from award-winning Halifax bands Black Moor (three time NS Music Award winner, 2010 ECMA nomination) and Sleepshaker (2017 MNSA nomination, 2018 ECMA nomination), and guitarist/vocalist Owen Williams explains that it has been a long time coming. They’ve quietly been working together and planning their release since as early as mid-2017.

“We’ve had plans to record and release a debut single for quite a while but had originally decided on another track, this was actually back before “In Love No More” was written,” says Williams.

During a co-writing session that Williams describes as “more for the fun of it than anything,” he bandmate Jarod Gallant struck gold on a song that would change that course, but not all at once.

“After finally landing on some chords, we played them on loop for hours trying to come up with a line or a hook to get us going, but got nothing. At the time, it seemed like some of the worst writers block I’d ever had. We were about to pack it in. But after staying up way too late, we finally got a line down and something just clicked,” says Williams.

The bulk of the song was written in the following 40 minutes, while Williams wrapped up the second verse on his walk home.

“As soon as we jammed it out with the band we knew this was the song. We all felt there was something that encapsulated the overall tone of where we were in our personal lives with this first cycle of material, and ultimately what we want this band to be.”

The band have since been tracking at Codapop Studios in Halifax, but there is no word yet on how soon Kids Losing Sleep will be delivering on a debut album.

“We’ve been working in and out of the studio ever since so we can’t wait to get this thing out there.”
