Lost & Found: Kurtis Eugene Revisits ‘November’
Kurtis Eugene is a hard artist to pin down. His “debut” album Old Rooms, New Light straddles a line between traditional folk and modern esoteric waltzes. Simultaneously intimate and grand, it feels like chamber music that’s been written for your grandfather’s guitar. It hovers just this side of magic, but to get there it was seemingly necessary that Eugene explore something even more otherworldly. Before Old Rooms, New Light could be manifested there was November, Eugene’s 2013 six-song EP that, for five years, dwelt in musical purgatory. New Music: June Body Grab the Alt-Emo Torch with ‘Life from Underneath’
The Get Up Kids are, for better or worse, easing into their roles as The Get Up Middle-Aged Men. New Music: The Backstays Self-Titled Debut Already Winning Awards
Saint John, New Brunswick is an acquired taste. And even if you do manage to acquire it, you know it’s probably for the wrong reasons. But, believe it or not, it is loveable. The Backstays are an ode to just that; they are a band that has stuck around the port city, for better or worse, with a coincidentally appropriate nautical name. Their debut self-titled EP has already garnered them a win as the Stingray Rising Star at this year’s Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival.
