Joel Plaskett Gathers Friends and Musicians for a Live Off the Floor Recording of ‘A Benefit 4 Dreamland’

Joel Plaskett’s latest project, 44, has proven to be the album that just keeps on giving. The massive celebration of his life’s work, not to mention a reflection on the corresponding number of years he’s spent on the planet, has provided no shortage of material, resulting in a Polaris Prize long-listed 11-song quadruple album.

Naturally, he didn’t go it alone. At times, he brought in an absolutely unfathomable number of musicians to perform on the album, including his recently released live-off-the-floor video for the album’s final song, “A Benefit 4 Dreamland.” Continue reading Joel Plaskett Gathers Friends and Musicians for a Live Off the Floor Recording of ‘A Benefit 4 Dreamland’

Mike Trask Visits His Own Pepperland on ‘Yellow Sky’

Mike Trask continues barreling down the path he first set foot on in 2017 with his album, Derealization. It’s not a straight path, but it is one that takes him further and further away from this plane of existence and off into his own version of Pepperland – each subsequent video bringing him another step removed from reality and into a cornucopia of colours. His latest, “Yellow Sky,” has Trask going full Sgt. Pepper as he “rides the rainbow.” Continue reading Mike Trask Visits His Own Pepperland on ‘Yellow Sky’

Thomas Stajcer Challenges the Odds, the Universe and Bad Ideas on ‘If I Had One Bottle More’

Talk about possibilities! With his latest single, Award-winning Nova Scotian country artist Thomas Stajcer asks the most profound of  questions: “If I Had One Bottle More.” The answer, if such a proposition might truly be fathomed by mere mortals and should we allow ourselves to believe in something greater than ourselves, is a resounding “absolutely almost anything within reason, but then again, maybe not.” Continue reading Thomas Stajcer Challenges the Odds, the Universe and Bad Ideas on ‘If I Had One Bottle More’

Tye Dempsey Captures All the Buzz of a Late Night Road Trip on ‘Spirit of the Street’

Having performed as a member of one band or another since the age of 15, Nova Scotia’s Tye Dempsey is undergoing a metamorphosis of sorts as he finds his footing as a solo artist. For that, he’s finding inspiration in a model that’s a clear example of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” and turning to some of the greats of heartland rock.

Dempsey’s latest video, “Spirit of the Street,” pays homage to the likes of Tom Petty, Bob Seger and Springsteen with a tip of the hat to the small towns they resonate with. Continue reading Tye Dempsey Captures All the Buzz of a Late Night Road Trip on ‘Spirit of the Street’

Owen Meany’s Batting Stance Suggests ‘Krakow’ Contains a Deeper, Darker Tale Than Most Songs Have a Right To

Daniel Walker is establishing himself as a storyteller. Given the literary nature of his band’s name, Owen Meany’s Batting Stance, an homage to one of John Irving’s great novels, it’s unsurprising. Walker’s most recent album, Feather Weights, is presented as a series of vignettes; each song a self-contained short story. The latest video, “Krakow”, gives a melancholy glimpse into the tail end of a European tour, briefly capturing a moment of isolation. It’s the hook with which Walker grabs us; it is subtle but poignant and leaves a great number of questions unanswered. If it were the introduction to a new Netflix special, we’d be binging it already.
