New Music: Wangled Teb’s ‘Seasonal Depression’ A High-Intensity Reflection

Breakbeat powerhouse Wangled Teb (aka Indigo Poirier) has just dropped her brand new EP, Seasonal Depression. A musical exploration of the weighted feelings that come with the dreary winter months, no punches are pulled on Poirier’s latest.

“Winter can be hard for a lot of people,” says Poirier, “and when I’m feeling down, listening to music that matches what I’m feeling has always helped me feel stronger.”

“I hope that the audience will get a similar sense of companionship and strength out of it if they’re feeling the same way.”

“drown_meV8.234923” starts us off with haunting, subtle bells before breakbeat jingles are sprinkled atop it. It doesn’t take long before we’re introduced eerie, beautiful sounds that float and intertwine with Poirier’s percussive maelstrom. As the 7-minute track progresses, Poirier adds a myriad of digital blips that evolve into the screams of very emotional robots, climaxing in what we presume to be the most untamed corners of cyberspace.

“’Drown Me’ is sort of meant to represent when you’re feeling kind of down and you just lay in the bath and space out,” explains Poirier. ”It’s kind of comforting, but also there’s a deep sense of sadness beneath the surface.”

“darkplaceV2.3” is even more discrete than “drown_meV8.234923”. Deep keys slowly guide us up shadowy castle steps while a whirly synth circles our mortal heads. Coming from behind is Poirier’s iconic breakbeat pandemonium, and synth bells send us off as we gaze into the night sky.

The titular track, “season_depressV6.5,” starts with percussion instead, and there’s a certain spunk to the bass that underlies these drums. The large space noise, deep synth, and piano suggest that there’s something much grim at foot. The second half of the track introduces us to intensity unlike anything we’ve ever seen before, with Poirier’s percussion almost a homogenous essence and NES sound effects blaring all around us.

With the end of winter fast approaching, listeners are sure to find worthwhile reflection in Wangled Teb’s Seasonal Depression.
