Logan Richard Offers an Alternative to Pulling off the Heartbreak Band-Aid on ‘Better Than a Breakup’

Logan Richard is having a bit of a moment. Over the weekend, he took home the Music PEI Award for Maritime Electric Lloyd Doyle New Artist of the Year for “Everyday,” a single from his yet-to-be-released self-titled album. On top of that, he’s set to perform  a sold-out show at the Confederation Centre of the Arts this week in Charlottetown to celebrate the release of his latest single, “Better Than a Breakup.”

Much like what we’ve heard of the rest of Richard’s upcoming album, “Better Than a Breakup” gets into the ups and downs of romantic entanglement. Or, in this case, romantic disentanglement. It’s about the recognition that your relationship might be something of a toxic dependency, doomed to fail, but the idea of pulling off that band-aid keeps proving too painful. Amid a slew of metaphors for destructive behaviours too good to quit, Richard gently croons away with platitudes designed to eke things out just a while longer.

“I have been performing ‘Better Than A Breakup’ live now for many years, and it quickly became a fan favourite. I think because it’s a relatable song: it’s about falling out of love with someone, but staying with them because you are scared of change/starting fresh,” explains Logan Richard. “I had a friend who kept breaking up and getting back together with his girlfriend a few years back. Clearly, they weren’t meant to be, but they were too scared of life without each other to do anything about it. That’s where the song came from.”

“Better Than a Breakup” is the final single to be shared from Logan’s forthcoming self-titled debut album ahead of its April 16th release date. However, if you’d like to hear more of the album, you can catch it being performed live at Charlottetown’s Confederation Centre of the Arts on Tuesday, March 30th — provided you’ve already got a ticket to the sold-out show.
