New Music: Prism Shores Debut with ‘Youth In Abstract’

Charlottetown indie outfit Prism Shores have dropped their debut album, Youth In Abstract. They couldn’t have chosen a better title; the group combines a modern sound with melodies that give off a mist of nostalgia, and we’re here for it.

“Lyrically, this album is sort of a reflexive meditation on being super young and living on an island,” said Jack Ethan, vocalist of the band. “We are from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, which can be very isolating and mundane, but can also feel like the center of the earth in the summertime.”

“Youth In Abstract,” the album’s title track, starts us off with a nice little blend of light-hearted strings with Ethan’s lyrics serving as a breathy backdrop. It’s an excellent track when you just want to hold still for a minute, whether you’re admiring the stars, the city, a quiet spot in the middle of nature, or allowing nostalgia to take over.

We’re introduced to a slightly quicker pace in “January,” but the charming indie groove continues to plant its foot firmly on the ground.

“Expo 67” has a bit more of a low-key vibe, boasting a softer melody not unlike “Youth In Abstract.” The difference? “Youth In Abstract” admiring your landscapes in the daytime, while “Expo 67” would suit nighttime views better.

“Suburb Aquatica” and “Rhyme/Reason” round off the album. “Suburb Aquatica,” with its slower pace, feels like a theme song for a lovely vacation. “Rhyme/Reason,” with its reflective, sun-drenched melody, feels like the drive back from said vacation.

Ethan also noted the band’s extensive collaborative creative process. “Our creative process has sort of organically shifted from what was ostensibly a solo writing project into a more fully formed, collaborative process.”

“The stuff we’re working on now has equal writing input from everyone.”

“People have been very nice so far and we are playing some fun shows this summer, so we are very excited!”
