Music Video: Weak Size Fish Put it to the Universe with ‘Roots of Creation’

Right on the tails of their Music•Musique NB nomination for Recording on the Year, seven-piece Fredericton-based dub-reggae band, Weak Size Fish have released a new video for their track, “Roots of Creation.”

Like most everyone involved in the music industry, Weak Size Fish found they had a little extra spare time on their hands this year. When their album release shows were subjected to widespread cancellations, the band say that they instead took to filming themselves in their bubbles and spending their ample extracurricular hours compiling the footage.

The resulting video is a lowkey collection of silly walks, dances, and the unsanctioned operation of a saxophone in a semi-aquatic environment. It’s uncomplicated, fraught with joie de vivre and, as far as self-produced video, it’s a miraculous work of art.

Also, there’s a tiny pig in the video and we’re so strapped for serotonin this year that this little ham might just be the pick-me-up that gets us through the season.

“The track pays homage to the golden era of roots reggae and dub, yet has a unique production style that surrounds the listener with layers of ambient textures,” says Andrew Thomson, the band’s bass player, describing the track.

Taken from Weak Size Fish recently released album, The Drift, “Roots of Creation” takes a relaxed approach to some of the biggest questions in the universe. More specifically it might be interpreted as: how did we get all the way from the momentous occasion of the Big Bang down to this moment, which, for a multitude of reasons, often seems entirely petty and mundane. Has our existence satisfied the telos of the universe and all that is left is for us to shout at strangers on the internet?

Weak Size Fish probably have a slightly brighter outlook than that and feeling some good vibrations as they sing, “but you keep on searching for light, and you will find meaning to existing.”

We might as well, but in the meantime can we meet that tiny pig?
