Single: Soap Opera Tease New EP With Aptly Titled ‘First’

Newfoundland vintage psych rockers Soap Opera have released the latest single; the aptly named “First.” The track is our first peak at their upcoming 5 track EP Be Fine which is due out in early February, 2020.

The band made a strong debut with their 2017 album “India” and this fresh single leaves no doubt the follow-up will secure their status as up and coming east coasters that you need to hear.

“First” is about digesting the loneliness that comes with the realization that a relationship is just not working out. Denial and avoidance is felt from both parties who likely desperately want to avoid the doom of joining online dating again.

“I know what you wanna say,
But you’re holding it back,
Just put your hand right on my chest,
Feeling a heart attack”

It’s the perfect backing to an 80s flick montage if there’s ever been one and that alone makes it loveable. Despite the lyrical loneliness, you can expect to feel uplifted  with the upbeat reverb-washed guitar and a little synth for good measure.

Band members Peter Lannon and Adam Engram both write and provide lead vocals for the group and, though Engram is responsible for writing “First” during a breakup, he says he is sort of speaking for the both of them.

“During this time, Peter was going through some of the same feelings and, being best friends, we went through it together.  So, although they are my words, sometimes we’re so on the same page that it feels like we write together although we don’t. It’s a beautiful thing,” says Engram.

The band say there will be another single coming our way ahead of the EP release and you can expect opportunities to see them live soon – if you’re in the Maritimes, that is. Soap Opera will be heading off on an Atlantic tour shortly after their EP release and will also be heading right back to the recording studio in the early new year. The band also hope to put out their first music video.

2020 is promising to be a full year for Soap Opera.
