Single: Scientist Of Sound Release ‘Bury Me Deep’ Just Ahead of the Apocalypse

It has been a little while since we’ve heard from our friends in lab coats. For those of us who have been eagerly waiting for this moment, bouncing from Daft Floyd show to Daft Floyd show, finally we get the news that Nova Scotia natives Scientist Of Sound have given us a new single and album release date to look forward to on November 15th.

It has been six years since the release of SOS’s award winning album Electric Scissors. If you know a thing or two about science then you know great discoveries don’t happen overnight. Six years in the lab perfecting the perfect sound, mixing beats in those tiny beakers has brought us here, giving us a new, yet all too familiar style of Scientist of Sound.

“We have never really set out to write in a particular style – just kind of what comes out comes out kind of thing,” explains vocalist Craig Mercer. “This album has definitely taken a turn towards prog rock with a little hint of Maiden and decent helping of Floyd influences in there. There are still the electronic elements that have always been a part of what SOS does—they are never going away—but it goes a bit further to the extremes of being more anthemic and moody than anything we’ve done in the past.”

“Bury Them Deep” delivers us Pink Floyd and Daft Punk thrown together in a blender then drizzled with a little Maiden. We are getting some real Dark Side Of The Moon vibes with this track. The repeating bridge is catchy and unique, the dry harmonies on the lead vocals send you into a trance and then right back into dance mode.

“The track is a part of the larger narrative of the album, and deals with past indiscretions, coverups, and abuse of power. Totally made up. Total fiction,” says Mercer.

“A lot of people right now are struggling to make sense of the world we live in – one where a muppet holds the most powerful position on the planet but there is no Kermit the frog to come out and say the show’s over. The album is kind of a narrative on one central character’s struggle to make sense of all of it — and this track represents just a piece of what they are trying to understand.”

Teasing up to the release of the album, the group has been releasing a collection of sketched images created by James Farrell to coincide with each track. The images depict a variety of people, whether it be in the midst of a protest, a conference or solving a puzzle. All these pieces give us an idea of what is yet to come with this new record and an interesting look into the tracks to be released .

“This record is nerdy as hell – it is an apocalyptic concept album for one, but it also has a melodic theme that rolls through a bunch of songs, and we’ve been working with one of our favourite artists, James Farrell, on creating a ton of artwork to go with it—which is some pretty dark and crazy stuff,” says Mercer.

“It’s definitely not for everyone, but it is probably a good album to go get yourself a speeding ticket to – so there’s that. Once we started putting these songs together and realizing just how nerdy the whole thing was, we got super into the whole idea and geeked out in the studio for way too long. The joke was that we were going to just keep making the record and put it out when we died, but if the world up and ended before then the irony would be just too much—so here we are.”
