Single: The Stanfields Paint a Portrait on ‘Breakers in the Dark’

The Stanfields are off on the road again (presumably to find out just how long it is), but they haven’t gone off empty-handed. The Halifax-based folk ‘n’ roll quintet are armed with “Breakers in the Dark,” the second single from their forthcoming studio recording and nod to 90s production values, Classic Fadeout.

True to The Stanfields style, “Breakers in the Dark” leaves you questioning your place in the world.

Painting a portrait of a barroom stereotype, the song chisels away at the familiar features we’ve seen a thousand times on a thousand faces, always lingering at the back of some dive bar show long after they should have gone home. They’re the ones who didn’t quite attain the status of a local legend, but toss out cliche conventional wisdom like it’s their own personal brand. They’re the sort that long ago chose to subscribe to Neil Young’s mantra: “it’s better to burn out than it is to rust” but never let it interfere with their 9-5 until Happy Hour on Thursdays and the occasional Tuesday afternoon. They’re almost certainly someone’s uncle.

It makes you wonder how many false steps you can make before ending up there yourself in another twenty years.

“We are terribly proud and excited to be sharing both this track, and the other new tunes eventually coming down the pipe. For a multitude of personal and professional reasons, 2019 has been an incredibly challenging one for us – but at the end of the day – we are a band of brothers whose love for making music overcomes everything the outside world can throw at us,” says The Stanfields’ frontman Jon Landry.

Classic Fadeout is expected to be released in January, 2020.
