Music Video: The Drug Rugs Release ‘Sandbar’ Just in Time for Beach Weather

In anticipation of their upcoming EP , Halifax based indie rock group The Drug Rugs have released a music video for their newest single, “Sandbar.”

Recorded at Spaces Between in Halifax, with final touches added by Brooklyn-based engineer Justin Gerrish, the song builds itself around bubbly imagery and a light hearted feeling although lyrics might suggest otherwise.

“The song is a tale about being with someone who is all talk and no-show, who under-delivers and leaves you with new predicaments to sort out,” says Emma LeBlanc, the band’s guitarist.

“It’s supposed to be a bit over-exaggerated and funny- with the bit about the guy bringing the girl out to sea, throwing their life jackets away, and then realizing they’re stranded! Overall the song is a light-hearted grievance from a girl trying to deal with her inept lover! We have always viewed ‘Sandbar’ as a fun and kind of ‘ocean vibe-y’ song to play!”

The video directed by Jeff Miller transports us into a colourful daydream accompanied by a psychedelic-pop sound, blending the retro visuals with the sounds of New Order. Laura Kempton’s easy approach to the vocals coincide nicely with the trance-like retro vibes we see in the video.

“Laura was the main force behind the video,” explains LeBlanc. “We chose to work with Jeff Miller because we were big fans of his work with Halifax band Walrus and we thought he could achieve the pretty, beach-y, psychedelic vibe we were hoping for.

“The video is about being delirious, daydreaming about being somewhere else – the beach, warm water, and carefree times. You are surrounded by endless shimmering sparkles and are being led into a deeper consciousness. We conveyed this idea to Jeff, settled on our friend Jessica’s super-cool kitschy pink room for many scenes, and then gave Jeff the rest of the creative freedom. He did a perfect job and we are so happy with the result.”

A date has yet to be set for the release of their new EP, although we can expect to see it closer to fall 2019. In the meantime, you can catch them at The Seahorse Tavern on June 7th playing alongside Superfluid and Calm Baretta.
