Tasked with topping last year’s performance by Chaka Khan, the TD Halifax Jazz Festival might be hard pressed to pull together a sufficiently impressive lineup but they’re off to a good start. Today’s announcement included the first five acts for the festival’s Waterfront Stage and St. Paul’s Church Series.
Topping the list of performers announced today are the multiple Grammi (the Swedish Grammys) award-winning duo First Aid Kit with special guest Tim Baker (best know as the frontman for Newfoundland’s Hey Rosetta! but also the amazing video he recently released). They’ll be performing Wednesday, July 10 on the Waterfront Stage.
Thursday, July 11th the Waterfront Stage will feature 2019 JUNO Adult Alternative Album of the Year winner and Grammy-nominee Bahamas with special guests Montreal’s Delta blues/folk band The Barr Brothers.
Finally, the Liebman/Murley Quartet, who festival organizers describe as “THE best quartet in jazz right now,” will perform on Thursday, July 11, at Halifax’s St. Paul’s Church.
“David Liebman has played with jazz masters including Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, Chick Corea, and more. Joining him for a night of contemporary jazz are Mike Murley, one of Canada’s leading jazz artists, having performed on 12 JUNO winning albums; Order of Canada member Terry Clarke, who has recorded over 300 albums; and Jim Vivian, one of the most in demand bassists in Canada, who is a jazz bass instructor and lecturer at the University of Toronto,” explained the festival’s announcement today, in case you needed further proof of their credentials.
Today’s announcement is just the tip of the iceberg for the largest music festival in Atlantic Canada. Expect lots more to come.
