Dave Gunning has earned himself multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards, a JUNO nomination, and eight East Coast Music Awards, but that has all come at a cost. Over the course of his two-decade-spanning career the veteran songwriter and storyteller has done the leg work by touring extensively and his newest single, “In The Time I Was Away,” is a lament for the moments missed while on the road.
“Mark Lang and I started writing this song one night while I was staying with him during a tour of Australia. Before the Australian tour, I’d been in the U.K. with the Ennis Sisters and, after that, Ontario with JP Cormier,” explains Gunning.
“All told, I’d been away for two months straight and it was hard to readjust into being back home again. I finished writing this song when I returned as a way of dealing with some of the overwhelming feelings that had a hold on me. When you’re away from home for large chunks of time on a regular basis you miss things that have happened. Sometimes they’re big things and sometimes they’re the little things.”
That all being said, Gunning is heading off on the road again. He has a busy two-month tour ahead that stretches from Nova Scotia to Saskatchewan in promotion of his upcoming album, Up Against The Sky, which is due out March 8, 2019.
