Music Video: Motherhood Blend Queen and Captain Beefheart on ‘Pick of the Pugs’

Fredericton’s circus-rock trio Motherhood are currently on tour, but their presence is continually felt on the internet. Today they’ve released a video for their single “Pick of the Pugs,” which pays homage to a couple of the band’s spiritual predecessors .

Pulling from Queen‘s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and a video of Captain Beefheart appearing on German television and 1972, “Pick of the Pugs” is a solid representation of the palatable middle ground. The track combines Queen‘s successful hooks and iconic floating heads with the bizarre “what the heck did we just watch/listen to/experience” art rock of Captain Beefheart.

The song itself features singer/guitarist Brydon Crain turning to vigilante artistry as he takes to passive-aggressively painting his ex’s house with a crew while his ex is away and lamenting his state as the lowliest of pugs.

Not quite shot for shot, the band make effective use of a whole lot of blue screen and some practical effects. The ’70s wardrobe was probably the hardest part of the whole thing to pull together. Toss in some tinfoil and a few shots of drummer Adam Sipkema’s dog for good measure (noticeably not a pug), and we’re spot on for Motherhood’s catchy weirdo modus operandi.
