Music Video: Fortunate Ones and a Lesson About Discarding Your Belongings in the Wilderness with ‘Hold Fast’

There are two types of people in this world: those who are entirely content to embark on adventures without their hats, money, walking sticks, and handkerchiefs with all manner of washing left undone, and those who are inevitably left to care for the former. Newfoundland folk duo The Fortunate Ones apparently manage to strike that balance as seen on their new video for “Hold Fast,”  the title track from their 2018 release.

And that isn’t to say that Andrew James O’Brien is the thirteen dwarves to Catherine Allan’s Bilbo Baggins, quite the opposite as Allan adventurously demonstrates, but the two do seem to strike a similar harmony.

The video shows the duo striking out across Newfoundland’s rugged woodlands, with O’Brien dutifully in tow with the luggage and compass, while Allan seems to be obliviously pollinating the wilderness with her discarded accoutrements.

No doubt there’s some deeper meaning here about the importance of experiences over material objects, but someone has to take care of these things. They don’t grow on trees and, even worse, they’re probably a choking hazard for turtles.

Fortunate Ones are just lucky there aren’t any trolls around. One glimpse of that loot and they’d be squashed into jelly.
