Prince Edward Island trio Fluffy Little Cowboys have released their latest single “You Can’t Catch Me” on the back of their upcoming Girl Power Tour, taking them through Ontario and the Maritimes. Co-written by Orlando-based Blue Man Group drummer Colin Robinson, the all-female indie-Americana group bring a unique moxie to the fray with this new release.
Starting with some brief guitar chords and percussion that would pair nicely with a bike ride, the track quickly dips into a more relaxed combination of soft vocals and gentle strings before hitting its stride in the chorus.
As we glide through the track, every sound gets to share the spotlight. The bouncing drum beat and congruent guitar chords contrast the drawn-out fiddle notes and subtle lyrics, making for a combination that suits the indie genre wonderfully.
The track is further built upon as lead vocalist Shelley Montreuil uses her voice to champion a lifestyle that refuses to conform to the docility associated with womanhood.
“Boys play with loaded guns all the time and no one bats an eye,” remarked Montreuil in reference to the first lyric in the chorus.
“But women are meant to be more demure, which I think is bullshit; I’m gonna play with the gun.”
And the ladies’ tour will be bringing a voice all its own to the table. After establishing strong relationships with female/non-binary songwriters around the world, Montreuil will lead the group with an energy of advocacy for such demographics, and Fluffy Little Cowboys will be incorporating co-writing sessions with other female/non-binary musicians and singer/songwriters.
This endeavour is the latest in a long line of events that have thrust women musicians into the forefront. This move by Fluffy Little Cowboys is sure to take the conversation a step further.
With a unique sound and unique tracks to boot, Fluffy Little Cowboys are an all-girl group on a mission, and we look forward to what’s coming next.
