Today the nominees for the 2020 Canadian Folk Music Awards were announced, with 105 nominations in 19 categories, and with no less than 21 going to Atlantic Canadian artists. Nova Scotia’s folk song-writer extraordinaire Dave Gunning himself is in a tie for first place against The Small Glories with four nominations each. Single: Sherman Downey Longs for the Quiet of Small Towns on ‘Front Porch’
Award-winning Newfoundland folk singer Sherman Downey has been busy. Mid-tour and with a new album on the way, it looks like Downey is going to be on the road for the foreseeable future. It’s the sort of stuff a lot of albums are inevitably crafted from; the life of the touring musician and Downey’s latest, New Beautiful, offers a glimpse at “what it’s like to wander from home and long for return.” His new single, “Front Porch” focuses more on the longing side of that equation and the realization that the relative quiet of a small town can be better than any adventure.
