Ned Pratt was born and has spent the majority of his life in Newfoundland. As a result he has developed a unique relationship with the land, sea, and sky of Canada’s easternmost province. No people, no romance, no sentimentality – this isn’t the Newfoundland found in travel brochures; it’s harsh and almost brutally unapologetic in its simplicity. But with the deconstruction of the world around him to the most simple of forms and colours, and with the distinctive point of view of Pratt, you see a familiar, comforting beauty. Monthly Roundup: September 2019

We’ve reached the end of Festival Season. At least the bulk of it. We’ll be picking off stragglers for some time yet, but there won’t be many more long weekends away from our desks, sifting through a few thousand photos in the back of a field. With Harvest Jazz & Blues out of the way (see our Patreon feed below) we can indulge in the great sin of our generation: a sedentary lifestyle. Still, it means there’s a lot of festival recaps on the way, and few surprises besides.

AREA 506: Locals Win Over the Crowd at Saint John’s 2019 Music Festival

Saint John hosted yet another year of their music festival AREA 506 during the New Brunswick Day long weekend in August. Each year the festival has continued to pull in big names (often cherry-picking from Osheaga all for the benefit of the port city) and it has progressively been getting more and more impressive. This year they welcomed City and Colour, Interpol, Joel Plaskett Emergency, Matthew Good and The Rural Alberta Advantage to the stage, just to name a few. Single: ‘Ivory’ – Dylan Menzie Creates New Song Based On Artifact From The Canadian Museum of History

Squarely in the category of neat projects is a new collaboration from CBC called Collection: Canadian Songs for the Future Inspired by Our Past. As part of the project Canadian artists Dylan Menzie, Arkells, Lights, and Iskwé were all asked to participate by selecting an item from the Canadian Museum of History and to write a song about it. Prince Edward Island troubadour Dylan Menzie’s effort resulted in “Ivory,” a piece inspired by the story of a 600+ year old man and his infant child.
