Halifax Producer/Performer waants Uses ‘Keep Careful (feat. Sorrey)’ to Fully Engage with 99% of Your Ears

Former singer, songwriter, producer of Halifax indie-pop band Glory Glory, Adam Warren, is now crafting full-spectrum hits as waants. His latest single, “Keep Careful,” is prepared to down and dirty with every bit of your dynamic range, tickling your eardrums right down to their toes. This is the song you need this week to justify owning a decent set of speakers.

“Keep Careful” features the Emilee Sorrey of up-and-coming shoegaze dreampop act Sorrey. Sorrey,  who up until recently had been based in Charlottetown, proposed a new twist to Warren: veering from his regular modus operandi so that she might take on the track’s lead vocals. Skewing from Warren’s habitual use of heavily distorted vocals, “Keep Careful” is comparatively gentle, with Sorrey musing over a relationship with all the attentiveness of idle hands.

“In the fall of 2019, Emilee had recently moved to Halifax and we’d been talking about doing some collaborating – maybe on a remix, maybe doing some writing, and when I played this track for her the first time we were hanging out in the studio she caught the vibe and was into singing on it,” says Warren.

“She had the idea to callback to the beginning of the song with the lyrics in the bridge, and was really cool about me totally mangling her voice for a few of the lines in that section with weird formant effects.”

The video similarly taps into the vibe of softcore relationship goals. At the hands of longtime friend and form Glory Glory bandmate, Gavin Maclean, the video offers a vaporwave vignette awash in a sea of pink and capturing a couple in the dispassionate throws of ambiguity. Maclean has also knocked out video clips for waants’ previous released singles “When Summer Comes” and “I Won’t Be Sad.”

Love u Forever, the upcoming debut EP from waants available via LHM Records on June 25, 2021.
