Single: Dog Day Returns After Seven-Year Hiatus With ‘Hell on Earth’

Marking the end to their seven-year hiatus and ahead of their upcoming album, Present, Dog Day has released a shoegazey and hazy track to help us ride out the rest of the summer. “Hell on Earth” puts the pop in pop-punk but adds a lo-fi twist.

The first we’ve heard of Dog Day since their 2013 release, Fade Out, the single carries the group’s well-known fuzzed-out energy and keeps spirits high while lyrically covering a heavy topic.

The opening lines, “Tomorrow morning we’re going to face hell on earth; well let them do their worst. When tomorrow dawns, it won’t matter where you went wrong; we’ll all share the burn” kick the track off with apocalyptic imagery while the guitar and bass beats remain upbeat and cheery.

The theme feels right on topic. With the apocalypse at the top of everyone’s mind during the year 2020, the track is a near-perfect representation of the overall summer 2020 mood: hazy and fun but with a touch of impending doom.

To record their upcoming album Present, husband and wife duo Seth Smith and Nacy Urich have reunited with Dog Day’s original drummer, Casey Spidle (Not You/Bad Vibrations) and are joined by Meg Yoshida (Not You/Bad Vibrations).

If “Hell on Earth” is any hint of what’s to come, we can expect to hear Dog Day in all of their glory, just as we remember them, for the remaining 12 tracks of the LP.

Present will be released on August 14th. You can pre-save the full album HERE and pre-order a physical copy HERE.
