New Music: Kids Losing Sleep Bring High Energy on Debut EP ‘LOVES’

Maybe it’s just the nature of the genre, but there’s something inherently nostalgic about LOVES, the debut EP from Halifax band Kids Losing Sleep. The magic blend of pop and rock was a staple of the mid-2000’s that never really lost its momentum. Classic rock influences, poppy synth, recklessly honest lyrics – Kids Losing Sleep have lent themselves excellently to these pop-punk sensibilities.

It’s apparent right from the start. “Dusty Love”, the first vocal track on the EP, fervently clings to the glory of youth and fights to keep that flame burning. It’s an apt opening sentiment, effectively setting the mood for the remainder of the EP. Every song, for better or worse, feels reflective, a monument to love and all of its highs and lows.

The only time the band pauses to take a breath is on the handful of instrumental tracks. Other than that it’s full steam ahead, even on tracks like “Maybe You’re Right”, which is clearly about wallowing in the pain of a breakup.

“The way I think about the word ‘love’ has changed just through writing all of these songs,” says Jarod Gallant, guitarist and vocalist. “I feel like it means something a little bit different than it meant before.”

There’s a constant effect of layered vocals that breathes extra energy into already high-powered songs. It ensures no song sounds even close to empty – every second is jammed full.

It only makes sense when you consider their self-proclaimed slogan – “it’s heartbreak you can dance to.” The band explores a strained relationship in a party environment with “PUT IT ON” and the tension is certainly palpable. At the same time, there’s just something about it that makes you want to crack a beer with your buddies in the kitchen. In that sense, the song is successful. The couple in the lyrics is obviously trying to fool their friends into thinking things are stable by attending this party together. It’s a facade that bleeds through into the song itself. The atmosphere is best summed up by the line, “get your party face, put it on.”

Kids Losing Sleep have built this first EP on wearing their hearts on their sleeves, and it’s a charming first impression to make. They combine youthful energy with the wisdom of experience. It makes for a listen that most can find some shred of comfort in. Slam your bedroom door, crank it up, and maybe dance a little for the best experience. You won’t be disappointed.
