Music Video: Mo Kenney Strips Down ‘Ahead of Myself’ for Acoustic Performance

Mo Kenney has released a single for what would be possibly our most anticipated album of 2019. The thing is, Mo Kenney hasn’t announced any plans to release an album yet. But, along with a new for video for “Ahead of Myself,” one of The East’s Best Songs of 2019 (So Far), there’s a series of tour dates that will take her across the UK and back through the Maritime provinces before the end of summer. Albums can wait… at least, for a while.

Produced by Jeff Miller in Joel Plaskett’s New Scotland Yard in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, the video has Mo Kenney performing what is purportedly an acoustic version of the song. It’s pretty spot on from the single we’re used to hearing, which presumably means it’s absolutely primed for those live performances.

The song itself details a rougher patch in Kenney’s life shortly after moving to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Free of roommates and responsibilities for the first time, Kenney admits that she was going a little wild with the possibilities.

It sounds like the sort of downward spiral that just breeds more trouble, but, as the lyrics document, there’s insult added to injury with a seriously cringe-worthy exchange:

“Hood of my car fell on my head, my eye was all black I looked half dead, gas station man said I mustʼve been talkin’ when I shouldʼve been listenin.”

Kenney otherwise describes the events of those early days in Dartmouth as being “reckless, but fun.”
