Single: Tomato/Tomato’s ‘Kite Song’ is Warm Fuzzies and Big Horns

Not to say that Tomato/Tomato have had any false starts, but every band experience a period of finding their footing as they experience success on increasingly larger scales. Tomato/Tomato are less than a month away from releasing their new album, Canary in a Coal Mine, and it might just be the album they’re forever remembered for — it’s likely to dwarf their previous releases. Or, at the very least, “Kite Song,” the second official single off the album, is going to give away our strong predilections for a strong horn section.

Recorded at the Bomb Shelter Studio in Nashville, Tennessee and mixed by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes, Langhorne Slim, Hooray for the Riff Raff), the album feels like a massive step forward. The band’s first two releases, So It Goes and I Go Where You Go, feel quaint in comparison. Tomato/Tomato have moved away from the impressive multitasking tap-dance of their shows as a duo, largely recorded at their own Porch Light Studios at their home in Grand Bay, and into was sounds like the even more impressive arrangement of a big band sound. What xylophones did for 2004, horns will do for Tomato/Tomato in 2019.

“Kite Song,” hasn’t veered off the band’s lyrical path that. This is still very much a Tomato/Tomato song, full of endearing sentiments from the inseparable duo. It’s The Beatles’ “Two of us” or The White Stripes’ “We’re Gonna Be Friends” all over again, but with a horn section.

Canary In A Coal Mine, the new 16 track album from Tomato/Tomato is being released March 1, 2019.
