Single: Alicia Toner Releases ‘Dangerous Home’ Single Along With Photo Series

As part of Music PEI’s Golden Ticket Program — which develops the work of emerging artists by partnering them with musicians, studios, producers and publicity from the team at SpinCount — Alicia Toner has released “Dangerous Home,” a song about the challenges of maintaining a life while being somewhat unsettled.

“I started writing it about a year ago, and then it was infused with some new life during Music PEI’s Songwriter’s Challenge in May. I was paired with Sean Panting from St. John’s and this was one of the songs we collaborated on,” says Toner.

Toner was also treated to a handful of East Coast names to work with, including Tim Chaisson (The East Pointers) and Stuart Cameron (The Heartbroken) as co-producers of “Dangerous Home,” and not to mention John MacPhee (Paper Lions), who manages the whole program.

The new single is described as Toner’s effort to dive deeper into the well of truth as the artist takes a new direction to convey this personal story.

“Most of it was inspired by trying to decide how I wanted to put more content into the world and promote it. I didn’t just want to do another photo shoot looking glamorous because it wasn’t authentic to me right now. Dangerous Home has a literal meaning to me but the more I thought about this project the more the definition expanded. It can mean your mind as well.”

Toner has also spent the last while working with Toronto photographer Sam Gaetz to transform it into a photo/essay series intended to broach a discussion on a lot of difficult topics, much of which centers around imposter syndrome and the feeling one might not be able to fully occupy the shoes of some impossible expectations.

“If I weren’t in a good place to talk about this I wouldn’t be putting it out. […] The idea behind it is the image a person puts into the world isn’t necessarily how they feel inside,” says Toner.

The fifth part of the “Dangerous Home” series is being released on Monday, January 13th, 2019, and can be found on Toner’s website, but she hints that it’s only part of a larger work; an album of the same name is due out later this year.
