Hillsburn can only fool us for so long. Admittedly, their sophomore album, The Wilder Beyond, is full of hits – it’s packed with award-winning songwriting and goosebump inducing harmonies. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have another agenda. It’s time to call out Hillsburn’s lyricist/guitarist Paul Aarntzen for what he really is: a filmmaker and soundtrack composer. He’s just proven it again with the bands latest video, “Sun Out To Shine.”
Sure, each of those tracks unquestionably deserved a video, but Hillsburn are self-producing these shorts full of punchy storytelling makes it seem like they’re headed for the Canadian Screen Awards, not just the Junos.
“‘Sun Ought To Shine’ is about unrequited love,” says singer/guitarist (and director/camera operator/editor/producer) Paul Aarntzen.
“An older person is reflecting on a relationship that ended a long time ago, singing the chorus both to her former partner and to herself. She’s saying: you’re a good person, you deserve love and kindness and good things, but you won’t always get them, and that’s OK.”
At the moment the band are finishing up their UK tour and have just announced plenty of Canadian tour dates in time for summer. There’s been no word yet on whether they’ll be attending the 2019 Canadian Screen Awards.
