Single: Damhnait Doyle and Stuart Cameron Cover Emmylou Harris’ ”Till I Gain Control Again’

Damhnait Doyle and her Heartbroken bandmate Stuart Cameron has released the first single from their upcoming album, Songs From Our Dads, a collection of songs from which the pair can trace back the musical influences that their fathers, John Allan Cameron and Clar Doyle, had on their lives and careers. “‘Till I Gain Control Again” arrives just in time for this weekend’s celebration of Father’s Day.

Originally written by Rodney Crowell in 1975 and performed by Emmylou Harris, “‘Till I Gain Control Again” has since been covered by the likes of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Blue Rodeo, Van Marrison, First Aid Kit, and Allison Kraus. The classic Country song has been rightfully recognized in the great canon of Americana music and, closer to home, has been celebrated by more than a few dads.

“My Dad is the reason I love what is now called Americana music. Out of the womb and into my spirit his favourite songs came and stayed,”  says Damhnait Doyle of the duo’s new compilation of what is, by definition, “dad rock”.

“My fondest memories with my dad were on the road. He taught me to accept all types of music, and to recognize the power of a song – from Mickey Newbury to AC/DC,” adds Stuart Cameron.

Cameron and Doyle note that “‘Till I Gain Control Again” was “already a labour of love, the experience of making Till I Gain Control Again was made even more special with the participation of some valued long-time friends.” More than a nod to their dads, Cameron and Doyle were able to incorporate the skillsets of their adopted family; particularly those of their bandmates Tara MacLean of Shaye and Peter Fusco of The Heartbroken. MacLean designed the cover,  while Peter Fusco mixed the album. They were also joined by east coast songwriting legend Gordie Sampson on piano.
