Single: Apryll Aileen’s ‘I’m Still Alive’ Is All Whisky and Gun Smoke

The latest single from Apryll Aileen has a big sultry sound. You can practically hear the whisky and gun smoke coming off of it. “I’m Still Alive” is an anthem for fighters; a song about survival for those who refused to give up and came back with a vengeance. It could be the theme for the next James Bond film.

The track makes reference to the Salem Witch Trials, in which a woman’s virtue and fate could be determined by testing her buoyancy, but Aileen’s pulls it off coolly.

“Would you drown me in water or wait for my body to rise?,” sings Aileen. Perhaps we needn’t mention the possibility of weighing her against a duck, lest we be turned into newts.

Aileen’s new single is perhaps her strongest, and darkest offering to date. Written as a collaboration between Aileen and Toronto-based producer Tal Vaisman, “I’m Still Alive” plays Aileen against Vaisman’s guitar as the two musically work their way through the flames of a heated argument.

“Producer/songwriter/musician Tal Vaisman and I created this song in about two hours, when I was going through a dark emotional time, both frustrated by my industry experiences, some inner demons and my own expectations,” says Aileen. “It’s certainly a lot edgier and darker than any music I’ve released to date, and that’s because when I wrote it, that’s exactly what was going on.”

“It wasn’t until I was in NY last week, when I realized this song is my crash collision with karma. There’s always that one moment that blows up in your face as you are trying to douse the flames.

“Thanks to Tal’s guitar licks and alt-rock vibes, I think we were able to articulate that moment – the climax of an argument, where both have torn each other apart, highlighting each other’s weaknesses through judgment of the other, realizing that you are not so different after all.”

Apryll Aileen has released “I’m Still Alive” just in time for the CBC Searchlight Contest. You can vote for the song HERE  until Tuesday, February 25, 2020 4pm AST. “I’m Still Alive” will be also be officially released across all platforms later on March 13.
