Music Video: Halifax’s Troy Alistair Introduce Themselves With ‘Jump The Gun’

Freshly minted Halifax band Troy Alistair are setting out to have as much fun as they can while playing songs about life and love and all things relatable. They are hitting the scene with their debut single “Jump the Gun” and epitomizing the dating world of the 21st century.

Mixing the classic east coast riff-rock sound with some rap, the track is upbeat and dance-worthy, fitting perfectly with the band’s aim to just have fun. Setting out to make friends and connections and encourage people to dance and get silly, vocalist and guitarist Taran Guest says if the band were to have a motto it would be, in the words of Will Ferris, “Everybody love everybody.”

Jump the gun is a song based around the concept of someone being ‘the one’ or your soulmate and how difficult it can be to determine, especially at a glance,” says Guest. “The song is a progression or a storyline about the process of meeting, then discovering or deciding if this person is, in fact, the one/your soulmate.

The track describes the common event of seeing someone in public, feeling attracted to them and approaching them to introduce yourself and see if things between you two might go somewhere. In the first verse and chorus, lyrics “didn’t want to jump the gun I just wanted to tell you where I’m from. […] Don’t jump the gun! Before I know you, before I can show you, what we can become” warn not to jump to conclusions.

Following that, the song progresses through wondering if things will work, the decision to give it a try and then finally asking yourself if they are the one you want to spend the rest of your life with. Riddled with questions that we’ve all asked ourselves about dating and relationships, like whether it will be just a one-night stand or a waste of time, the song is real and honest.

Released with a video and recorded live off the floor, “Jump the Gun” is just the beginning for Troy Alistair. Formed just this year, the band are now making plans to get out and play some live shows and expect to start working on an EP throughout the coming winter.
