Loviet Gets Out of the Business of Being Her Own Worst Enemy on ‘Dullshine’

“Is this a breakup song?” I ask Natalie Lynn of Loviet. Every time. It’s a pattern that we’ve fallen into over a series of releases and subsequent interviews.

Invariably, they are not. She and her partner, Ryan, have endured the pressure cooker of 2020 and more, and they have come out the other side all the stronger for it. Given Loviet’s continuous development as an artist and her perennial subject matter of critical growth, the question hasn’t been entirely unprompted.

She has simply been breaking up with herself this whole time. Continue reading Loviet Gets Out of the Business of Being Her Own Worst Enemy on ‘Dullshine’

Hemineglect Still Searching for Their Sound on ‘Is Obsolete’

Hemispatial neglect, or hemineglect, is a neurological condition resulting in the brain being unable to perceive objects on one side of a person’s body. Hemineglect is also a Halifax-based alt-rock band that just released Is Obsolete, their follow-up EP to last year’s debut album. The Bloody Hell Tackle the Elephant in the Room With ‘Nobody Cares About America Anymore’

The unreality of the situation has led to frustration, disenfranchisement and, ultimately, ennui with our brain cells winking out after sustaining a fatal number of eye-rolls.

The conclusion, inevitably, has been manifested in the new video from The Bloody Hell, “Nobody Cares About America Anymore,” the band’s take on the state of the nation which, surprisingly, doesn’t point any fingers at the more obvious targets. Joel Plaskett Gathers Friends and Musicians for a Live Off the Floor Recording of ‘A Benefit 4 Dreamland’

Joel Plaskett’s latest project, 44, has proven to be the album that just keeps on giving. The massive celebration of his life’s work, not to mention a reflection on the corresponding number of years he’s spent on the planet, has provided no shortage of material, resulting in a Polaris Prize long-listed 11-song quadruple album.

Naturally, he didn’t go it alone. At times, he brought in an absolutely unfathomable number of musicians to perform on the album, including his recently released live-off-the-floor video for the album’s final song, “A Benefit 4 Dreamland.” Continue reading Joel Plaskett Gathers Friends and Musicians for a Live Off the Floor Recording of ‘A Benefit 4 Dreamland’

Sleepy Kicks Are All Charm on Debut EP ‘Hard Left’

The debut EP from Halifax “indieboi” four-piece Sleepy Kicks is packed with just as much charm as you might expect if you’re familiar with their online presence—from claiming beginnings through a blood oath to listing “jorts” as an official band component (contributed by Braden Kamermans, if you were curious).
