New Music: Capital 6 and the Unlikely Event of Designing an Airplane Mid-Air, ‘On the One’

Making a Jazz record is much like designing and building an airplane mid-air. While you may have intimate understandings of how an airplane is built and excellent blueprints, the rush of the air as you catapult through the sky can make for a weighty distraction. Capital 6 has built a functional flying machine with On the One. It has many of the hallmark features of contemporary jazz recordings (for better, or worse) and is certainly a fun listen. Anyone familiar with Jamie Comeau & The Crooked Teeth knows that the band don’t rush. The band may have sky-rocketed to fame in their home province of New Brunswick, but it still took them two years of burning up festival after festival to properly get their debut album released. It’s only taken the longest year in history for them to release their latest single, “Wide Open”, with a special live performance at Saint John’s Imperial Theatre. My Black Ram Takes to the Street with Driveway Delivery Concerts

With a total lack of venues, the band has instead taken to serenading supporters at their doorsteps around the Fredericton area as they’ve gone about delivering purchased CDs, vinyl and T-shirts. Instead, the festival will be celebrating in their own new and unique way.
