Hillsburn can only fool us for so long. Admittedly, their sophomore album, The Wilder Beyond, is full of hits – it’s packed with award-winning songwriting and goosebump inducing harmonies. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have another agenda. It’s time to call out Hillsburn’s lyricist/guitarist Paul Aarntzen for what he really is: a filmmaker and soundtrack composer. So when they write a song like “Handshake Deal” about trying to reclaim some self-confidence after going through a manipulative relationship, it still comes off as pretty fun.
