Jennah Barry released “Big Universe” today, the fourth single from her upcoming album, Holiday, as continues building on the illusion that the ’70s never ended in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia.
Directed by Kat Shubaly, the video captures the deep pre-show ceremonial ritual of Barry donning her war paint as she prepares to confront her enemy on the stage of battle. Never mind that there doesn’t appear to be any audience – some of the hardest battles we can possibly face are entirely internalized, and a little mental preparation goes a long way.
“See yourself slide to the dark, making mountains out of nothing nice,” sings Barry of our favourite pastime.
The big hair, soft lighting, and Bacharachian backing make it clear that the video is completely removed from time and space and any unnecessary concern for the present. This is as far away from Nova Scotia’s South Shore as it gets. It’s like its own little pocket scene from the world of Boogie Nights, set somewhere safely off-camera and only loosely tethered by some fleeting association with the music supervisor and costume designer.
“There was a period in my life where I read my horoscope not matter how goofy the source was. I was circling the drain a bit and was desperate for someone to tell me what to do. The horoscope writer for US weekly did not help me with this. ‘Big Universe’ is about that,” says Barry. “Despite the confusion I was feeling in the song, I worked with three really great women on the music video and had a very life-affirming experience (something that doesn’t necessarily happen very often in the biz). We went overboard with a haze machine and created a storyline for a woman who plays big for no one.”
Jennah Barry’s new album, Holiday, is schedule for release on March 27, 2020 which will soon after be followed by a series of UK performances.
