Single: Go, Homeboy! Hippie Turns Hip Hop With ‘A Beautiful Thing’

The East Coast hip hop scene has a received it’s newest addition, Go, Homeboy! Releasing his second track from his upcoming currently unnamed album, “A Beautiful Thing” features vocal backtracking by Brooke Burns formerly of Hum and Hollow to take things in a unique direction…

“As someone who doesn’t come from a hip hop circle, and isn’t really part of that community yet, I really hope my music can open some people up to hip hop that might not think it’s their jam,” says Matt Walls aka Go, Homeboy!.

Although a hippie at heart, with the influences of the Grateful Dead showing prominently, hip hop was Walls first choice of music growing up. With the addition of artists such as Chance The Rapper and Open Mike Eagle figuring into his personal influences, Walls decided to take the leap and try it for himself. Helped by Jay Merrill and Stephen Lewis at Marshall Studios in Fredericton, he set out to make his first album.

“I first got really into hip hop in Junior High. Wu-Tang, Tupac, A Tribe Called Quest, etc,” says Walls, “I grew out of it a bit by High School but never stopped liking it. I discovered some newer artists a few years ago like Chance The Rapper, Childish Gambino, Open Mike Eagle, and Noname, among others that that really rejuvenated my love for it.”

“I never really set out from the beginning to start making hip hop, but one verse lead to another, to a few more. Next thing I knew I had a growing collection of lyrics and songs I felt were worth sharing. So I learned how to make some beats, and commissioned my good friends at Marshall Studio to help me make them into some proper tracks and here we are.”

“A Beautiful Thing” sets off an almost soothing feeling with it’s warm downtempo beat and background harmonies. You will find it hard not to relate to something in the lyrics when he’s spewing out references such as the Beastie Boys or Judge Judy. The chorus relays a message that everyone has a voice so if you have a love for music then you should create it.

“I generally don’t set out to mean too much in particular with a song,” explains Walls, “I’m all about the rhymes and fun wordplay, and the lyrics tend to follow the rhymes, so to speak. Sometimes a message or theme emerges, but it’s not typically planned. I mean, the chorus is fairly simple to interpret. The verses are just me rambling on as usual about stuff.”

Along with new music Walls Has created a book of children’s poetry which is set to be released around September by publisher Paul McAllister. You can also Catch Go,Homeboy! Performing his first summer set at Evolve Festival this summer for their Sunday hip hop showcase.
