Music Video: Fortunate Ones Go Deep With Their Starscape Video For ‘Northern Star’

St John’s (note: not Saint John’s) Catherine Allan and Andrew James O’Brien, better known as JUNO-nominated duo Fortunate Ones, are finally following up their 2015 debut album, The Bliss, with a new single and video, “Northern Star.” The track comes from their upcoming sophomore album, Hold Fast, out May 25th on Old Farm Pony Records.

“Jason has created a dream-like starscape that feels hypnotic and deeply compelling. We were blown away by the execution of his vision,” says Fortunate Ones‘ Andrew James O’Brien of “Northern Star” director Jason Levangie work on the video.

“The song is about traveling a long journey to a new beginning, and with the themes of the ‘Northern Star’. I wanted to make the band emblematic of a guiding force, a light in the darkness… so to me, the band in the video is a celestial Rosetta Stone, a singing map, guiding weary travellers through the cosmos,” says Levangie.

The video is a feast for the eyes, while still holding the basic format of a performance video Levangie has immersed the band in a colourful starscape (go ahead, you try to do that). While it might look cool now, there’s still a nagging feeling that this might be the contemporary rendition of a laser backdrop. Time will tell.

Fortunate Ones can currently be found on an extensive North American tour as special guests to fellow Newfoundlander and former Great Big Sea frontman, Alan Doyle.
