Single: Maura Whitman Kicks Some Dead Weight and Heads to Rio on ‘I Don’t Need You’

Under different circumstances Maura Whitman’s new single, “I Don’t Need You,” would be a song about empowerment, resilience, and freedom. It’s about getting back up on your feet and moving on.

Produced by Corey Lerue (Neon Dreams, Ria Mae, Port Cities), “I Don’t Need You” is the epitome of a chunky pop song. Co-written with Lerue and Nicole Curry, the song is about recognizing where you are might not necessarily be where you want to be, and Whitman is not gentle about kicking some dead weight to the curb.

“Anything I want, I can make it come true, I know it hurts to hear, but I don’t need you,” Whitman sings, touting her plans to buy a big house on the water and take weekend trips to Rio with her friends.

Whitman explains that the song was written about realizing that the person you wanted to be with just isn’t for you and that you are much better off without someone who wastes your time with games.

“I’m so done being patient, did you forget that I’m amazing? I’m about to go places,” sings Whitman with all the vigour of someone exiting a relationship with a great display of determination.

As she says, “I Don’t Need You” is about “reminding the person who hurt her that she is going to be just fine without his love.” But maybe let’s just hold up on the day trips to Rio for the next few months. She might not need whoever it was that was holding her back, but 2020 sounds like a great year for getting a cat instead of visiting a beach full of tourists.
