Who enjoys long rain-sodden walks on the beach and singing along to ABBA? Christina Martina does, apparently. From her new album, Wonderful Lie, comes this new video for “The Winner Takes It All,” one of four covers on the album.
Filmed by Nicole Cecile Holland at Joggins Fossil Cliffs, Nova Scotia the video is full of long looks and extreme close-ups as Martin gives her own take on the heartbreaking lament for Björn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Fältskog’s marriage. Martin’s own perspectives on the song, however, are nothing but enthusiastic.
“My girlfriend had some ABBA albums in high school and I’d go over to her house, and we’d dance and sing along to their music,” says Martin of earliest exposures to the Swedish pop group.
“I wanted to try an ABBA song because I love their songs, so I sat down and just tried singing and playing this one on guitar, and it felt like a potential good fit to challenge my voice, but I didn’t really know if it would make the album. I had to learn how to sing it which came with practice, recording it, listening back, and getting into character.
“My brother Robert and sister Roxanne were visiting this summer with their partners and we let them all listen first. They gave us the thumbs up, which was good enough for us.”
Christina Martin is already on tour, making her way through Newfoundland before embarking for the rest of Canada, followed by a European tour in the new year.
