Single: Jamie Comeau & The Crooked Teeth Release ‘Tall Pine’ Just in Time for CBC Searchlight

We’ve talked about this before. It’s only been a matter of time. Jamie Comeau & The Crooked Teeth, the most exciting band to come out of Saint John in years, finally drop the first single from their upcoming debut album. “Tall Pine,” recorded at Marshall Studios in Fredericton with Jay Merrill, might have a message that suggests you take some time to relax, but the band wrapped it up in a tune that consistently gets festival crowds up and dancing. So give a listen, relax, and shake it like it’s compulsive.

The song sprung out of the summer of 2016, before The Crooked Teeth had come together, when Comeau says he was just beginning to take song-writing more seriously. From there it was a downward spiral; more writing led to more performing, and more performing, and Comeau’s popularity got the best of him. He didn’t know where to stop. That’s when he wrote “Tall Pine.”

It’s a song about knowing when the time is right, and knowing when to take a breath and relax and enjoy the little things, says Comeau, and it’s about paths that never connected because it just wasn’t the right time. Once the band had formed, we decided it would be a great addition to the album, even though it was written three years prior. Now I couldn’t be more excited to share its growth over the last three years with my friends, family, and those who have taken an interest in us.

Still not one to take his own advice, Comeau and the band have been pressing forward. With their self-titled album fully recorded and nearing completion they find themselves performing steadily and now releasing this single just in time for CBC’s national Searchlight Contest. Searchlight seeks out undiscovered musicians from across the country each year, with a celebrity jury that awards a grand prize of an Allan Slaight Juno Master Class and Juno Awards experience, a week in a recording studio at the National Music Centre in Calgary and a chance to perform at the 2019 CBC Music Festival.

“CBC Searchlight is something I never gave my full attention to as an artist,” says Comeau. “Honestly, I never thought I was on that ‘level,’ so to speak. When my friend and bandmate Nick LeBlanc brought it up, I instantly took towards it and wanted to be a part of it. After all the hard work we put in this past two years we all thought it would be a perfect opportunity to release a song from the album and at the same time gain some more momentum in the east coast music scene.”

You can vote for Jamie Comeau & The Crooked Teeth’s new single “Tall Pine” on CBC Searchlight. The winners for CBC Searchlight will be announced March 7, 2019. The band’s self-titled is expected to be released sometime in the summer of 2019.
