Fredericton’ Wicked Vices announced their upcoming self-titled EP today with the release an environmentally-minded single, “Sinkin’,” all about the “temperatures rising on [this] sinking boat.”
The band say that “Sinkin'” was written for their appearance at Fredericton’s Harvest Jazz and Blues Music Festival back in 2017. For those of you who haven’t been playing along a home, the findings of the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change over the last year and a half have suggested we should all be much more scared than previously thought.
Wicked Vices apparently figured there was a song in there somewhere.
“I don’t think it is a protest song as much as a narrative or fantasy, even if it may resonate to our near future,” says Geoff MacDonald, the band’s bassist.
“We had been trying to adopt more of a blues rock sound to suit Kristen’s voice and we came up with this cool progression and catchy melodic lyrics.
I wrote the lyrics about an article I read on climate change and post apocalyptic dystopian shows I had been watching.”
While not explicitly singing about any catastrophic events, “Sinkin'” reads out more like the introduction to the next AMC series.
“The song follows a character travelling the abandoned roads, looking for shelter, resources, people,” explains MacDonald. “They begin to feel defeated and finally admit defeat to mother nature as humans begin to become submissive to their environment and lose the ability to manipulate their surroundings. The song ends with questions answered. That question being, can we over rule nature?”
Spoiler alert: probably not.
Wicked Vices say to expect at least another single in the near future, and an EP release sometime in early February, 2019.
