The Best Music Of 2016 (So Far)

#12 Work Away by Classified ft. David Myles (Enfield, NS)

‘Work Away’ took on a very different meaning over the last few months for many Canadians. Originally intended as an ode to those who have to travel across the country for their jobs, it turned into a sombre tale for those affected by the tragic fire in Fort McMurray. Classified proved his class when he announced that proceeds from the song would be donated to help those who lost everything in the fire.

#11 Subliminal by Heaven For Real (Halifax, NS)

This one is a bit a of cheat. ‘Kill Your Memory’ from Heaven For Real isn’t out until the 15th, but we’ve been blessed with some early singles. The album gets deep into experimental rock, drawing heavily on jazz, and riding at the very edge of dissonance, but ‘Subliminal’ is the lukewarm pot of water waiting to get you there. Prepare to get weird.

#10 Steal Ya by Tomato/Tomato (Saint John, NB)

Bluegrass’ sweethearts John and Lisa will actually steal your heart with this track. ‘I’m Gonna Steal Ya’ is yet another example of how Tomato/Tomato’s contagious enthusiasm will have you nodding, stomping and singing along at the same time…which will still pale in comparison to the synchronous collection of multitasking motions that Mrs. Tomato herself pulls off in the run of any one of their catchy numbers. Good luck keeping up!

#9 Truck by The Galpines (Moncton, NB)

There’s definitely something to be said when a song’s chorus turns into a running joke. The Galpines are fun, ridiculous, and a tongue-in-cheek epitomization of a cultural subsect. The beauty of Truck lies in its complete relevance to Maritime life. Begrudgingly or not, we all have a truck lover in our lives. Truck will either help you better understand them, or in the very least give you some fodder for some covert mockery.

#8 Some Kinda Nerve by David R. Elliott (Halifax, NS)

David R. Elliott manages to fill a room with instruments, and then strip a song down to just some drums and his voices. ‘Some Kinda Nerve’ could be a dis song, but sung sweet enough that it sounds like poetry. Also paired with a beautifully simple video, and some sweet dance moves that could give Drake a run for his money.

#7 Lion In Chains by Nap Eyes (Halifax, NS)

Lion In Chains is one of those songs that you can’t quite put your finger on. It’s not immediately mind-blowing awesome— but with enough listenings it’ll inevitably cause an implosion of the mind. It’s one of those songs that you can listen to over and over and never fully grasp, which is why you’ll end up playing it on repeat and falling in love with it in the process. The terrifying image of having a lion in chains above you is in stark contrast to the combination of mellow nod rock and idiosyncratic lyrics that you’ll come to love and expect from Nap Eyes.
