On an ordinary, boring day in 2016, with the bleakness of Saint John’s dim sky darkened to an unusually apocalyptic shade, a shadowy saucer descended from the overcast skies, bringing mad cosmic beats! There were some who danced and some who shoegazed. Others simply bobbed their craniums in what could only be interpreted as a sign of optimistic approval. The way in which people are approaching many topics, like gender, sex and race, and the language with which we describe them has come under scrutiny. It may take a while to identify any sweeping and lasting changes to the music industry, but rap, the genre of lyricism, has been a steadfast holdout.
Levi Rowan’s new video for his single ‘What Happened’ is, comparatively, standing on some relatively safe ground. At it’s core is a tale of post-breakup debauchery as catharsis, but at least it’s largely self-inflicted. The undeniably talented Rowan possesses a self-awareness that sets the song apart as a layered act of self-destruction—a modern day Romeo meets Macbeth. So, we asked him where the genre was headed. The Case Of The Missing Salmon: Artwork Stolen From Uptown Saint John
Earlier this year, ten fibreglass salmon sculptures were created through a public art initiative coordinated by Discover Saint John and the Province of New Brunswick. Standing at six feet tall, the salmon sculptures would be painted by local artists and placed around Saint John’s uptown as an “urban kaleidoscope.” One of the ten salmon pieces went missing this week. The Uncertain Future Of Arts And Culture In Saint John
In as little as four months, Saint John will lose its longstanding steward of arts and culture, Bernard Cormier. Cormier, who is in his 31st year as Cultural Affairs Officer (CAO) for the City of Saint John, is set to retire at the end of March 2018. With the City’s growing budgetary woes, it has refused to make any promises about keeping Bernard’s position once he retires. In an effort to convince mayor and council of the role’s importance, the Saint John Community Arts Board made a presentation at last Monday night’s common council meeting on November 27, 2017.
