Ten years and two EPs into their music career, Carry the Lost are currently preparing for the release of their debut album. Despite the decade of history already behind them, including opening for Big Wreck, performing on Canada’s Got Talent, and having their song, “Never Easy,” be featured in the end credits of The Trailer Park Boys, Carry the Lost still had yet to take the first and most crucial step that so many Nova Scotian bands and musicians had taken before them: filming a music video at the abandoned textile mill in Windsor.
When Pocologan Camp Party officially transitioned from a backyard party to a full blown festival it only took two years before the question had to be asked: “exactly how you determine the maximum capacity for a backyard?” With a huge buzz growing around the small festival and an amazing line-up this year, it left festival organizers worried that they’d be turning would-be festival-goers away at the gate. Prior to finding his place in the indie-pop scene, Brandon Howard Roy spent years working as a professional stage actor in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. It was not the glamorous career it had been talked up to be; on the contrary, it proved to be demanding, cut-throat, exclusionary and abusive.
On the bright side, let’s just say that 2019 has well prepared us for whatever next year might bring. At home, at least where arts and culture are concerned, nothing is literally on fire (but did you see our Top 100 Songs of 2019?). We can be thankful that the most ground shaking news came in the form of a few tremors that rippled through the festival scene as Shambhala announced their change in dates and caused a few festivals across the continent to shift nervously in their wake. Some festivals were more shook than others.
