Saint Nick would forgive you for not equating rap and hip hop with Christmas, but there is an underappreciated overlap. Let’s even skip over the fact that Christmas lights are essentially just bling for your house/tree, that Santa’s suit would only otherwise be accepted in a late ’90s rap video, and that the spirit of excess can be heard echoing throughout our seasonal spending. Instead, let’s take a moment or two to appreciate the Maritimes’ predominant emcee’s addition to what may surprise many to learn is a pretty substantial collection of Christmas rapping. Atlantic Canadians Receive 15 Nominations for 2021 Canadian Folk Music Awards
Of the 100 nominations across 19 different categories announced for the 2021 Canadian Folk Music Awards announced today, 15 went to Atlantic Canadians. While Pharis & Jason Romero (Horsefly, BC) led the way, taking a whopping 6 nominations, and the legendary William Prince (Winnipeg, MB) received 5, The East Pointers found their way into third place, with nominations in the categories of Contemporary Album of the Year, Contemporary Singer of the Year, Pushing the Boundaries, and Single of the Year. Monthly Roundup: November 2020
There’s something in the air that feels a little different; maybe it’s that we’re all getting the hang of 2020 (at least some parts of it), maybe it’s recent Presidential turnover south of the border, or maybe it’s the impending sense of Christmas cheer that seems to have come early.
