Q&A: Why Comedian James Mullinger Still Works Here

Last month we reviewed James Mullinger’s film ‘Anything Is Possible’,  the recently released full length comedy show of his record-setting performance at Saint John’s Harbour Station. Over the course of the show the Londoner-turned-Maritimer turns the mirror back on his audience in a celebration of the quirky idiosyncrasies of the east coast lifestyle he finds himself immersed in.

Mullinger openly admits during the show that the arena-sized crowd could find him any day of the week wandering around the aisles of the local supermarket, but were still willing to purchase a ticket to see him on stage.

Film Review: James Mullinger’s ‘Anything Is Possible’ Harps On Life In New Brunswick

James Mullinger is no stranger to Saint John, and thanks to his comedy special, Anything Is Possible, he’s been seen across Canada. The show was broadcast nationwide on CBC as part of City On Fire, a documentary about Saint John: a city that has struggled with self-image and reinvention. It depicts Mullinger’s perception of the city’s potential and the lead-up to his arena-packing show at Harbour Station.

The full comedy show was released on January 22nd in Canada, both digitally on Amazon and Hulu, and at Sunrise Records on Blu-Ray. But it still raises the question: who in Canada hasn’t already seen this, and is it worth it seeing again?

James Mullinger has been the world-class ambassador Saint John has needed for a long time. The Maritimer by way of London eased the city into the limelight by gently poking fun at it.  He recuperated Saint John’s self-image by teaching us to laugh at ourselves and celebrating the best parts of it. Exclusive: James Mullinger Aims To Pack Saint John’s Harbour Station A Second Time

Last year James Mullinger set out to do the impossible, as James Mullinger tends to.  In a city that has a notorious reputation for being last minute to everything, and the only hope of selling out a show is to bribe your grad class, Mullinger managed to pack Harbour Station with his comedy. It’s a feat no other New Brunswick born comedian has yet to accomplish. Mullinger even managed to sell more tickets than Jerry Seinfeld who performed there in 2013, and tonight Mullinger announced that he’s aiming to do it again.
